Begum Parveen Sultana is one of the most celebrated singers of the Patiala gharana of Indian classical music. She was born to an Assamese family of Afghan heritage. She started learning music from her father when she was five years old and later on sharpened her skills under the tutelage of Acharya Chinmoy Lahiri, the doyen of Agra gharana. Parveen Sultana’s breathtaking voice is famed for its range, clarity, and versatility. Spanning nearly four octaves, she can swoop from patient meditations to powerful evocations in an instant. She has displayed her brilliance not only in Khayal but also in renditions of Thumri and Bhajan. In 2013, Begum Parveen Sultana enthralled the august gathering at the Bengal Classical Music Festival with her scintillating performance.
