Potential Tropical Cyclone Six Forms, Forecast to Strengthen Into Hurricane Aiming for Coast

A new disturbance, named Potential Tropical Cyclone Six, is forming in the Gulf of Mexico and is expected to strengthen into a tropical storm by Monday. Forecasters predict it could become a hurricane by midweek, threatening the U.S. Gulf Coast. The storm, located 300 miles south-southeast of the Rio Grande’s mouth, is moving north-northwest and could hit Louisiana and upper Texas by Wednesday. Tropical storm watches have already been issued for northeastern Mexico and southern Texas. Heavy rains, flash flooding, and dangerous storm surges are expected in these areas, as well as parts of southern Louisiana and Mississippi. The National Hurricane Center warns that storm surge and damaging winds could become life-threatening starting Tuesday night. This comes amid an active 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, with five named storms so far, three of which became hurricanes.
