Every Sunday, dozens of senior citizens gather at the Imperial Ballroom Dance Studio in Manhattan’s Chinatown in New York City. Under dazzling neon lights, they spin and dance to music from a bygone era. “When I’m on the dance floor, I forget myself,” said 76-year-old Celeste Chou. “What is my age?” Many other senior dance students like Celeste are immigrants who devoted their younger years to a career or family life. And since discovering ballroom dancing during retirement, they have found joy in their new-found passion.
“Make every day a happy day,” said 79-year-old Jolene Deng. “I will keep coming here to dance as long as I can.”
