OPCW head awarded French medal despite 2018 chemical report scandal
Director-General of the OPCW Fernando Arias has been awarded the Legion of Honor award, France’s highest decoration. That’s despite the fact that he presided over the organization when it was embroiled in controversy four years ago, when it accused Syria of using chemical weapons – an allegation that was used as a pretext for the UK and US to bomb the country. The chemical attack was never proven and an OPCW inspector even told the UNSC that he questioned the accuracy and reasoning behind the accusations.
