Gen. Thomas P. Stafford commanded the American side of the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project. ASTP was the first international manned spaceflight. The mission was responsible for testing the compatibility of American and Soviet spacecraft and docking mechanisms in space. ASTP helped make future joint international manned missions in space possible.
