How Confucius influences China’s politics | Sternstunde Religion | SRF Kultur

Xi Jinping, China’s president, is reviving what Mao once fought against: Confucianism. What does Confucius have to do with current Chinese politics? What is the renaissance of this sage all about and what did Confucius want with his teachings over 2500 years ago? Topics in this episode: 00:00 Who was Confucius? 11:59 How much Confucianism is there in today’s China? 24:08 What are Confucian values? 43:36 Communism and Confucianism: do they go together? After the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1945 and at the latest after the brutally enforced Cultural Revolution in 1966, Confucius and the teachings associated with him lost importance in China. The attempt was made to create a new society that literally owed nothing to the past and tradition, explains literary scholar Andrew Hui, who spent his childhood years in Hong Kong and has published on Confucius. In the past 30 years, however, the Chinese leadership has once again embraced Confucianism. The ruling Chinese Communist Party now celebrates it as a symbol of Chinese culture and identity. At the same time, it has clearly not renounced communism. How does the ancient tradition of Confucianism fit in with Marx’s teachings? How did Confucius envision an ideal society? What role does the individual play in this and what would Confucius say about current Chinese politics? Olivia Röllin in conversation with Andrew Hui, Fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin. In this version, the questions are in german but with english answers.
