Q: What do the different shapes mean?
A: Each shape corresponds to a different type of instrument. Flutes are ellipses, single reeds (clarinets) are octagons, double reeds (oboe, English horn and bassoon) are inverted ellipses (stars), bowed strings are rhombi, brass are rectangles, plucked strings (including harp) are triangles, and timpani are fuzzy rectangles.
