The sole strait, Riviere Salée, that divides the archipelago’s two main islands is the shape of a butterfly. Long beaches and sugar cane farms can be found on the hilly island of Grande-Terre. The island of Basse-Terre is covered by the Parc National de la Guadeloupe, which includes the La Grande Soufrière volcano and the Carbet waterfalls.
