During a sit down interview with Dominic Raab Louisa James asked him about supermarkets reporting an increase in thefts, for example a pensioner stealing shampoo and washing powder to which he replied: “Right to criminalise that pensioner? Absolutely yes, there should be no exemptions.” His comment comes after the former Chief Constable of Merseyside Police, Andy Cooke, has said police should use “discretion“ when deciding whether to prosecute shoplifters amid rising poverty levels.
