Storm Henk: ’Hero’ saves life of mother and child from flooded car

A “local hero” rescued a three-year-old girl and her mother from a car caught in floodwater in Birmingham on Tuesday as the aftermath of the strong winds and heavy rain from Storm Henk continued. Video posted online shows Liam Stych, 28, hanging on to the railing of a bridge in Hall Green, southeast Birmingham, as a car appears to become wedged underneath due to the pressure of the floodwater. Stych, a roadworks engineer and traffic manager, is then seen pulling the young girl from an open window of the car. His partner, Tia, who is five months pregnant, rushes forward to comfort the child and can be heard reassuring the girl by saying, “Mummy’s fine.” Read the best of our journalism: Subscribe to The Times and The Sunday Times YouTube channel: Find us on Facebook: Find us on Twitter: Find us on Instagram:
