Sonny Sharrock was a legendary American jazz guitarist and composer known for his aggressive, avant-garde style. Born in Ossining, New York in 1940, Sharrock began playing guitar at the age of 8 and went on to study music at the R&B Conservatory of Music in White Plains. Sharrock’s music career began in the 1960s, when he played as a sideman for such jazz and R&B greats as Pharoah Sanders, Herbie Mann, and Archie Shepp. He also recorded albums as a leader, starting with his debut release, “Black Woman,“ in 1969. Throughout the 1970s, Sharrock continued to push the boundaries of jazz and rock music with his unique guitar style, which emphasized distortion, feedback, and dissonance. His playing was often described as “free jazz“ or “noise,“ and he became known for his intense, wild performances. In the 1980s, Sharrock worked with a variety of musicians from different genres, including jazz drummer Elvin Jones, punk rock band The Boredoms, and rap group Digital Underground. He also composed music for films, including the 1987 horror movie “Hellraiser.“ Sharrock’s career was cut short by his untimely death from a heart attack at the age of 53 in 1994. However, his music continues to inspire and influence a generation of musicians. Sharrock was known for his technical prowess and his ability to create unconventional sounds and textures with his guitar. His music was often characterized by its raw energy, unconventional harmonies, and unpredictable rhythms. His albums often featured long, improvised solos, and his live performances were known to be intense, chaotic, and unpredictable. Sharrock’s legacy continues to be felt in the worlds of jazz, rock, and experimental music.
