This style of rig is probably one of the oldest ways for rigged hard lures especially for large predators like salmon and pike. In this set up i have used ’O’ rings to attach traces to the hook hangers but in older versions either week wire or light thread were used. The idea was to let the hooks break away from the lure body to prevent the fish using it as a lever to unhook themselves. Currently on the Tay Salmon river in Scotland a similar method is used to rig small vision 120 hard plastic lures and elastic bands which break easily are used. Rapala have their version on the Rapala X-rap Haku which uses a plastic clip.
It is also very similar to a lot of pike soft plastic lure rigs that are used with jig heads or a screw in wire loop.
