T-Rex Binson Echorec Vs Vintage Baby Rec, Volante, Boonar, Catalinbread Echorec & Boss DD-200
We LOVE the Binson Echorec-style drum echo. And T-Rex has brought it back to life!
Welcome to the show! Let’s just say it: this is THE most anticipated effects device of the last few years… according to me and Dan anyway. No super computers nor mega processors here; no easy portability nor Swiss-Army-knife functionality. Nope, it’s reborn old tech, it does one thing, it’s noisy, cumbersome and of course, comes with a reassuringly, erm, confident price tag. People of tone, welcome the all-new Binson Echorec, a genuine multi-head magnetic drum echo made by the laudable people at T-Rex in Denmark.
If you want to know more about Echorecs, watch this:
And indeed this:
Today we’re firing it up for the first time at TPS alongside a handful of the other leading drum echo simulators from Strymon, Dawner Prince, Catalinbread and Boss. And of course a genuine old one.
Are we left spinning or does it get drummed out of the studio? Before this copy gets any worse… please enjoy the show!

Mick’s note on the Boonar phase issue…
No doubt there will be lots of comments telling me I’m wrong, so I tested this thoroughly after filming. I set up two amps, got them in phase with no effects, and used TheGigRig G3 for true, true bypass! All my other effects play in phase in this rig.
Here are my results from this particular Boonar, serial number 355-16.
’OUT’ means phase flipped in relation to the original signal. ’IN’ means the phase stays the same.
Trails bypass, pedal off: OUT
Trails bypass, pedal on: OUT
True bypass, pedal off: IN
True bypass, pedal on: OUT
As you can see, no matter what the bypass mode, in this particular Boonar the effected signal is always flipped phase.
To double check, I did the same test with the Catalinbread Echorec, and for all states (buffered bypass, true bypass, effect on and off) the phase result was IN. Hope that explains it clearly!
