It was not an ethnic border, as German speakers live also east of this river, but it marked the old fault line of conflict between steppe nomadic peoples and settled people after the collapse of the Danube Limes. Today we take a look at the sourroundings of the Roman settlement between the small towns of Leithaprodersdorf and Loretto and the mysterious hills of the Leithagebirge. I grew up in these hills and it is here that I discovered my love for history and Rome.
