Dustin Furlow plays a Spohn 00 12-fret (Swiss Moon/Tasmanian Blackwood)
I’ve been following the work of German luthier Max Spohn for a few years now, so I was thrilled when he offered to send over his personal guitar to check out while visiting the Netherlands. This is part of my tune “Remembrance“ in CGDGCD, which you can find on all platforms or CandyRat Records’ YouTube channel.▪️
For those who have not heard of him, Max is a former apprentice to Ray Kraut (formerly an Ervin Somogyi apprentice) and his builds carry Ray’s influence but with differences in finish and tonal properties. They are very responsive, particularly this example with it’s 12-fret bridge placement which resides closer to the center of the soundboard.
The woods on this guitar are remarkably beautiful and striking - bearclaw Swiss moonspruce over gorgeous Tasmanian Blackwood for the back and sides (…and neck!). I was delighted to also find out the inlays for the headstock, rosette, and backstrip were made from a beautiful stone by the name of Phyllite that he found walking in his girlfriend’s neighborhood.
