Western Australian senator Fatima Payman has quit the Labor party but will stay in the upper house as an independent.

Payman has told a press conference at Parliament House in Canberra that she was ’deeply torn’, but saw ’no middle ground’ and did not believe her principles aligned with the leadership of the Labor party over Palestine. The 29-year-old was elected to the Senate in 2022 for a six-year term representing Western Australia
