In this video, Dr. Shell discusses the Indiculus Superstitionum et Paganiarum, an index of prohibited Saxon religious practices under Frankish rule. Though mostly in Latin, it contains several Old Saxon words like nodfyr, “need-fire“ and dadsisas “dead-lamentings“ for instance. The list is either dated to 743 CE, if compiled by Boniface, or composed between 790 CE and 800 CE by an Anglo-Saxon missionary at the request of the Archbishop of Mainz.
Update : Apparently, there is recent scholarship out there that claims the spurcalia/Sporkelmonat never existed. If you all want to check it out and formulate your own opinion on the matter, the information on the article is: Nathan, Ristuccia. 2013. The Rise of Spurcalia: Medieval Festival and Modern Myth.
