Borneo Warrior Dance - Tarian Magunatip (Bamboo Dance)

Borneo Warrior Dance at Imago KK Time Square, Sabah. 25th December 2018. Tarian Magunatip (Bamboo Dance) the warrior dance of Borneo. In the old days it cannot be performed just by anyone for fun. It was either performed during a healing ritual by the tribe’s bomoh (shaman) known as “sambung nyawa” or “megendi”; or, it was performed as a victory dance when warriors return from a head hunting raid. It is considered as one of the most popular traditional dances in Northern Borneo. The name “Magunatip” is derived from the word “apit”, which means “to press between two surfaces.” The warriors with good timing and agility, will follow the tempo of the music placing their feet in and out of the clapping bamboo poles. Some would even do it blind folded. In the old belief, if the dance is done outside of the ritual and without knowledgable elders present, the dancer will bring serious bad luck to themselves. Today the dance is performed in cultural events and celebrations for entertainment. #Brunei #KotaKinabalu #Sabah #Iban #Dayak #Magunatip #BambooDance #BorneoWarriors #WarriorDanceHeadhunters #Borneo #BambooDance #Tinikling #TarianMagunatip
