Lemon Volcano

You will need: - A lemon - Food coloring - Washing liquid - Baking soda - Some extra lemon juice For a volcanic eruption with a difference, try making a lemon volcano. Explore the chemical reaction that occurs when the citric acid from a lemon mixes with baking soda. This will not only look, but smell great as well. * Suggest children predict what will happen when the baking soda is poured into the cavity of the lemon. A bit of mystery invites curiosity and wonder. * Talk about the smell of the lemon. What does it smell similar to, will the smell get stronger when you add the baking soda? * Experiment with just how much baking soda is needed for the reaction to occur. Record children’s estimates. * Introduce new descriptive and fun language such as ooze, squelch, pulp, reaction, citric acid etc * Consider repeating this experiment with other citrus fruit such as oranges, grapefruits etc. Thanks for watching!
