Ukraine: Hasty Debaltseve retreat in the face of overrunning odds

In Ukraine, government forces have pulled out of a strategic town in the east of the country, where troops were fighting against Russian-backed separatists. Ukraine’s President today called it a “planned and organised“ withdrawal from Debaltseve - following a fierce assault by rebels. There is supposed to be a ceasefire in region, after a deal agreed earlier this week. The town stands in the middle of buffer zones set up by the deal on both sides - from where heavy weaponry was meant to have been withdrawn.
