ADL’s Never Is Now 2022 | Courage Against Hate Award Presented to Albert Bourla of Pfizer
This year, ADL presented our annual Courage Against Hate Award to Dr. Albert Bourla, Chairman and CEO of Pfizer. A true leader who cares and innovates and inspires others to do the same, Bourla received the award at the Summit on Nov. 10 in New York.
Pfizer’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic was a powerful and lifesaving example of the company’s capabilities and culture under Bourla’s leadership. Refusing to accept public funding and instead investing more than $2 billion dollars at-risk, he inspired colleagues to deliver a safe and effective vaccine in just eight months – a process that typically takes 8-10 years – without compromising quality or integrity.
Earlier this year, he was named the 2022 Genesis Prize Laureate in recognition of his leadership during the pandemic. The Greek-born Bourla, who is the son of Holocaust survivors, plans to donate his $1 million prize from the award to projects aimed at preserving the memory of Holocaust victims, especially in Greece. Bourla’s parents were among the few survivors of Thessaloniki’s Jewish community, which was all but wiped out by the Nazis during World War II.
ADL recognized Bourla at Never Is Now, following previous Courage Against Hate honorees including Apple CEO Tim Cook, Chobani CEO and Founder Hamdi Ulukaya, Merck Executive Chairman of the Board Kenneth C. Frazier and L’Oreal Chairman Jean-Paul Agon. The award honors visionary leaders who promote understanding and unity in a complex world and exemplify ADL’s core values, including courage, collaboration, inclusion and integrity.
