Zelenskiy attacks Russia on 90th anniversary of Ukraine’s Holodomor famine

Ukraine’s leaders have paid their respects to the victims of the country’s worst tragedy - the 1932-33 Holodomor famine in which several million people starved to death. In a video released on Saturday (November 25), President Volodymyr Zelenskiy used the 90th anniversary of the famine to draw parallels between Russia’s treatment of Ukraine then and now. Ukraine marks the famine on the fourth Saturday of November and calls it a genocide, a stance backed by 30 other countries, committed by the Soviet Union which ruled Ukraine at the time and sought to crush its desire for independence. Moscow denies the deaths were caused by a deliberate genocidal policy and says that Russians and other ethnic groups also suffered because of famine.
