Ludwig Philipp Scharwenka (16 February 1847, Samter, Grand Duchy of Posen – 16 July 1917, Bad Nauheim) was a German composer and teacher of music. He was the older brother of Xaver Scharwenka. In the first place the work is formally in one movement, although there are several subsections which could themselves be considered movements. It begins with a slow and darkly colored Lento pathetico introduction which has the quality of a recitative and is quite passionate and as the title suggests full of pathos. A brie
