Στην χοροεσπερίδα του Λαογραφικού Χορευτικού Ομίλου “Κρήτες“ ο δάσκαλος Πετράκης Γιώργος και η παρέα του βγαίνει στο κέφι! Cretan group “Cretans“
The cretan folcore group dancing Pentozalis war dance.
It belongs to the category of the pyrrhic - war dances. It is danced mainly by men, with the
dancers holding each other by the shoulders, arms stretched in an open circle. According to
historical sources, on October 10 of 1769, rebels led by Daskalogiannis invited Stefanis
Triantafillakis, or Kioros, to Anopoli to prepare a new dance especially designed for the “fifth
zalos”, meaning the fifth attempt of the Cretans for liberation. There, Kioros stayed for six
months and composed the melodies of the new dance, which had to be twelve, as many as the
warlords, and the ten steps, to symbolise the starting day of the revolution, the day when all of
the captains, held by the shoulders, would perform the dance of freedom. Each step and each
synchronised beat of the dancers on the ground has a ritualistic character that exudes the
martial nature of the dance.
