Our poll to discover the most underrated/underappreciated ABBA song has declared a winner! “If It Wasn’t For The Nights“ was ABBA’s should-have-been single from the Voulez-Vous album in 1979. Supposedly written to reflect Björn Ulvaeus’s feelings about his divorce from Agnetha Fältskog, the upbeat instrumentation hides surprisingly sad lyrics about coming home to an empty house.
Originally intended to be released as a single in 1979, ABBA’s partnership with UNICEF had them opt for the gentler “Chiquitita“ instead. Thus, “If It Wasn’t For The Nights“ was regulated to an album track and is often passed over by the more casual listener.
The song is a joint lead vocal between Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, though both women take turns singing the solo line “it’s bad, oh so bad“.
