Maastricht Treaty Anniversary: 25 years since EU founding agreement signed

February 7th marks the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Maastricht Treaty, or the Treaty on European Union (TEU). On February 7, 1992 the treaty was signed in Maastricht, Netherlands by 12 countries, including the UK. The accord, which at first struggled to find favour, set the direction of European integration - notably on monetary union - for the next decade and beyond with the creation of the euro.
