Yoon warns N. Korea of stronger retaliation to provocations as he remembers 55 heroes fallen in West Sea 윤대통령,“북한, 도발 감행시 더 큰 대가 한미동맹•한미일 협력 강화“ Good evening. Thank you for joining us. I’m Yoon Jung-min. On this day of remembering the 55 sailors and marines who died from three different North Korean provocations, South Korea’s Commander-in-Chief sent a stern warning to North Korea, saying the regime will pay a much greater price for any reckless provocations. He also vowed for stronger cooperation with the U.S. and Japan. Kim Do-yeon starts us off. A stern message to North Korea by President Yoon Suk Yeol on a day to commemorate the 55 fallen heroes who died in battle while protecting the nation’s western maritime border. This came at President Yoon’s speech on Friday at the 9th West Sea Defense Day’s main ceremony with North Korea’s threats at the maritime border continuing to heighten. Just this year, North Korea has conducted hundreds of artillery firings toward the West Sea, called South Korea the “number one enemy state“ and “immutable principal foe“ while declaring that it does not recognize the inter-Korean maritime buffer zone also known as Northern Limit Line. He reaffirmed that the nation will maintain its defensive readiness and strengthen its power to protect citizens and added that peace achieved through compromises only puts the nation at greater risk. He also emphasized international cooperation. The ceremony was held at the command center of the Navy’s 2nd fleet in Pyeongtaek, Gyeongi-do Province where the ROKS Cheonan came back even stronger last December to join the rest of the fleet. Back in 2010, the ROKS Cheonan was sunk by a North Korean torpedo killing 46 on board. They are part of the 55 remembered on West Sea Defense Day along with six heroes from the Second Battle of Yeonpyeong in 2002, and two from North Korea’s shelling of Yeonpyeong-do Island. President Yoon said their spirit remains with the military and the active servicemen and women have inherited that spirit to defend the nation today. He also said those sacrificed will not be forgotten. As he wrapped up, Yoon also made sure to tell the rest of the country to join in encouraging and supporting those serving the nation.
