Volkmar Klien surrounds his audience with loudspeakers and – with the help of these – pulls up new sceneries. In doing so he erects a world that – while audibly encompassing people – is, given it remains invisible, not quite there. The composer surrounds his audience who find themselves in a sea of sound. Electronic sound provides a powerful form of virtual presence; sounds do leave the world behind the loudspeakers and thusly not only surround but also flood the room, they inundate it with themselves. And the people in it submit to be adrift; or they leave.
