Caribou caught in an Alaskan #9 wolf trap! Released! Trapline check. Gopro Hero8
This is my first year trapping and was on my second trapline check of the year. I had caught a wolf in this set the week before. This time I was surprised to see that I had a young caribou bull stuck in the trap. I had a caribou tag and had planned to take one while out on the line. But after some deliberation I couldn’t take a caribou in this way unless it was injured. My only option was to attempt to release it. Having never released a wild animal from a trap I had no idea what I was doing. I had horses when I was younger so my entire plan was to treat it like a shy horse and gain its trust. I spent 20 or so minutes working with him before I started filming getting closer and closer until he would let me handle the trap without much of a fuss. I did not have trap setters with me and bought some for all my traps as soon as I got home. If I had trap setters this would have been much easier. lessons learned. this encounter made me really think about where i set my traps to try to avoid catches like this.
