Chikal Kalo a Unique Monsoon Mud Festival celebrated at Devaki Krishna Temple in Goa - Must Explore

Chikal Kalo - a unique mud festival is celebrated on the 11th day of the Ashaad month of Indian Calendar, at Devaki Krishna Temple in the village of Marcela in Goa. Every man becomes a baby Krishna on this day, and all the boys of the village play in the mud. They pay the same games as Krishna used to play. They break the Dahi-Handi tied on top of the tall peepul tree in front of the temple. Someone gives them oil to oil their bodies, some people distribute sweets while others wash them and feed them lunch. It is a community driven festival where even a 60-year-old man feels like an 8-year-old boy. The tradition started on the island of Chorao where the temple was originally located, but as the temple moved to its new place during Portuguese rule, so did the festival.
