Violence broke out when monarchy supporters demonstrated in the capital Kathmandu on Thursday, 23 November 2023. There was a fierce clash between the police and the protestors. The police had to fire tear gas shells to disperse the protesters. Meanwhile, seeing the increasing uproar, Nepal’s army has been put on alert. This demonstration in support of the monarchy is being led by Durga Parsai, who is an entrepreneur and herself a former Maoist. After the violence, mobile and internet services have been partially stopped in Kathmandu. Nepal became a republic in 2008 after an 11-year long Maoist insurgency and civil war.
