Turkish police prevent demonstrations and detain dozens of protesters in Istanbul on International Workers’ Day, also known as May Day. Central areas of Istanbul’s Taksim and Istiklal Street have been fenced off to regular vehicle and pedestrian traffic as city authorities seek to quell large gatherings in the area, resulting in some clashes between small groups of protesters and police.
