Don Slepian ~ Sea of Bliss (1983) • [cs rip] • [ambient / drone / new age]

00:00 Sea of Bliss 28:08 Awakening Don Slepian is one of those legendary composers who paved the way for electronic music as we know it today, and unlike many of his generation, he wasn’t forgotten, remaining an entry point for many enthusiasts of early electronica. even though he was associated with the New Age genre, Slepian’s music is backed up with a lot of technical effort and innovation and leans towards more sci-fi futuristic sound ~ at least on this cassette. Don was on of the few to work with Alles Machine in Bell Labs, the first “music computer“ or, basically, a digital synthesizer, which allowed pretty intricate sequencing and rumbling sub bass, probably due to the possibility to tune its sine wave generators precisely. there are several releases called “Sea of Bliss“ in Don’s discography: the original album from 1980 ( Don own label’s CD edition with an extra track from Sonic Perfume cassette ( and this version from 1983 released in Germany, which actually compiles the original Sea of Bliss track with “Awakening“ from his other 1980 cassette “Open Spaces“. 2019 vinyl reissue at Numero Group is the same as this tape (yet, shortened to fit the sides) even though their press-release says it’s a reissue of the original 1980 cassette. but it’s a beautiful vinyl which is still available here: and here i’m uploading the 1983 copy from my collection for the hardcore fans of the true tape sound, complete with hiss and an amazing natural saturation of the german-made chrome tape =)
