A night hike through the Swedish Lapland boreal forest - GEOMAGNETIC STORM March 13th 2022 - 4K

It took us 5 hours to get to Vittangi near Kiruna from Tromsø. We did so because during bigger solar events, the substorm activity (the best of the auroral activity) travels further south, as the magnetosphere of the Earth compresses under the shock and the auroral oval widens in latitude. We would still have seen aurora in Tromsø, just a bit fainter and from far away. After 5 hours of relentless driving against the clock to get there in time before darkness, we just stopped at a random parking spot in the middle of nowhere on E45 to Vittangi and decided to scout around the area for a bit. It was already -8C and the Sun was about to set, so we knew we wouldn’t have a lot of time. As a result, we just went with every bit of equipment we had with us (7 cameras in total lenses, tripods, dollies...) and snowshoed to a clearing that was far away from the road. When we set up there, it was -15C and we could already see frost depositing on our jackets. Fortunately, we had lens warmers with us, an indispensable piece of gear up here in the Arctic! We set up all the cameras we had and the aurora was already starting to make an appearance in our southern sky! The moon was also very bright, which allowed us to see pretty much like daytime all around and made the experience even more magical! We stayed there until 3 in the morning, as we got graced to what we believe is the best aurora show thus far this season! Greens, pinks, reds, blues and magentas started dancing in bright and colorful coronas, and we felt just as if we had a connection with the sky for the time of a night. This was one of the most unforgettable experiences of my chasing career, as it was so otherworldly. Movie filmed in real time (except 2 sequences in S&Q mode) one the Sony a7sIII with Sony 14m f1.8 and Sigma 20mm f1.4. Graded and edited in FCPX.
