Mavin Khoo, the world-renowned bharatanaytam dancer talks about his role in Darbar (in the UK) this year and the strength and purpose of Indian art generally, in a global context. Very inspiring. A must watch for anyone interested in South Asian art and culture generally, and how its spirit continues to exert influence around the globe.
Darbar is Europe’s largest celebration of Indian classical music and added dance to its schedule last year.
Supported by the home of British dance, Sadler’s Wells - one of its associate artists, the Kathak global icon that is Akram Khan, curates.
Khoo, a close friend of Khan and one who grew up trying to establish a career as a dancer alongside him, talks about his Abhinaya workshop during Darbar, and his work with bharatanatyam dancers Renjith Babu and Neha Mondal Chakravarty (shown rehearsing in the film) who are perfoming a duet on the marquee Saturday evening (November 24).
