Мрамор (Russia) — Ритуалы эксгумации — 2024 full length
The third album of this eight year quartet that started in Buryatia and is now located in Novosibirsk.
As previously seen, this album blends the intensity of depressive black metal with the ethereal, often melancholic tones of post-rock, creating a soundscape that is simultaneously harrowing but also deeply beautiful. The whole record is layered with haunting and deeply emotional melodies, which are further enhanced by the effortless transitions between harsh, distorted passages and softer and more introspective moments, allowing the listener to fully immerse themselves in the emotions conveyed.
“Ритуалы эксгумации” delves into themes of existential dread, personal decay, and the haunting presence of death. For instance, the lyrics of “Сепия” explore the numbness and hopelessness of being lost in a labyrinth of concrete walls, while “Эпитафия” reflects on the self as a prism through which the past distorts and refracts. These themes are carried through the album, culminating in the title track, “Ритуал эксгумации”, where the protagonist grapples with the visceral imagery of unearthing a long-buried childhood self, a confrontation with past trauma.
The lyrics are a powerful companion to the music, which offer a narrative that is introspective. Songs like “Алекситимия” capture the struggle of articulating deep-seated emotions, where the protagonist wrestles with the urge to scream yet finds himself drowning in despair. Similarly, “Искажение” paints a grim picture of a world decaying alongside the self, where everything from the air to the sun becomes a source of irritation and exhaustion. The recurring imagery of death and decay is vividly portrayed, making the album not just a musical experience but a deeply psychological journey.
Tracks like “Мне снился сон” and “Детский мир” are also particularly striking, as they blend surreal dreamscapes with nightmarish reality, depicting a world where the boundary between life and death is blurred. The former recounts a dream of walking in the snow without leaving footprints, probably symbolising a sense of detachment and non-existence, while the latter delves into the trauma of childhood fears, evoking images of hiding from an omnipresent evil in the comfortless corners of a domestic hell.
Мрамор once again shows their ability to evoke deep emotions through a fusion of musical styles, creating an album that is not only melancholic and cathartic but also presenting a piece of art that is touching for those who have experienced the darker aspects of life, offering a hauntingly beautiful reflection of despair, decay, and the fragile human condition.
