This excerpt is from the story “Nalacharitham randam divasam,“ where Nala and Damayanti are banished to the forest and left to fend for themselves. Nala, wearing only one cloth, attempts to catch birds for food, not realizing that they are actually Kali and Dwapara in disguise. The birds fly away with his cloth, revealing their true identity to Nala. Dejected, Nala shows Damayanti the path to her father’s kingdom but she refuses, declaring that she is content with him. As night falls, they rest in a dilapidated traveler’s lodge. Exhausted, Damayanti falls asleep while Nala ponders the idea of leaving her to ensure her safety. Eventually, he tears half of Damayanti’s cloth for himself, torn between abandoning her and staying by her side. Ultimately, his darker nature, represented by Kali, takes over, and he abandons her.
