UAE ’recruited al-Qaeda’ to carry out assassinations in Yemen

The United Arab Emirates recruited former al-Qaeda members and hired American mercenaries to carry out political assassinations in Yemen, according to a new BBC investigation. The stated aim of these efforts was to curb terrorism in Yemen’s southern area, but the majority of targeted killings were carried out against members of al-Islah, the Muslim Brotherhood branch for Yemen. The UAE government has denied that it had targeted individuals not connected to terrorism, and said its counter-terrorism activities were conducted at the invitation of Yemen’s internationally recognised government.
