After recording tracks onto the first tape machine (Tape A, see below), the tracks were then combined and mixed (“reduction mix“ or “bouncing“) onto tracks of the second tape machine (Tape B, as shown in these clips). Bouncing freed up tracks to overdub additional instruments. This technique was devised to overcome a limitation of 4-track recording equipment.
