The Maytals & Carey And Lloyd - Trojan & Grape Records - 1972

The Maytals, ’Pomps And Pride’ from 1972, one of my favourite songs from a huge repertoire of favoured songs by Toots and his Maytals. This is one of my go-to songs for when I am not feeling so good, or if I feel that I’m in a darker place mentally than I should be at any point in time. Play loud enough to rattle the window frames. Although just a quick fix for any stresses, it works for me at least for a short while! This version of ’Pomps And Pride’ is backed up in the studio by Byron Lee’s Dragonaires band. The DJ version, Carey And Lloyds, ’ Come Down’ is a wonderful slice of Alcapone-esq vocal squeeks and yelps, and was released on the Grape record label also in 1972. Carey Johnson started off releasing a handful of cuts for Coxsone Dodd in the latter 1960’s, including ’Musical Scorcher’ and ’More Scorcher’. Lloyd Young seems to be the baby of the duo, having started his career off in 1972 for Prince Tony and Winston Riley.
