Possession (1981) Starring Isabelle Adjani and Sam Neill. Directed by Andrzej Zulawski. Written by Andrzej Zulawski and Frederic Tuten(!). Effects by Carlo Rambaldi. Isabelle Adjani won Best Actress at Cannes for this film and her role in Quartet. It’s easy to see why from this sequence, though it’s not even one of the film’s more sensational. As Variety describes - “Possession starts on a hysterical note, stays there and surpasses it as the film progresses.“ A beautiful film with lots of surprises, and an unexpectedly moving metaphor for the deterioration of a relationship.
