Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia: lessons for democracy of 1989

November 17 is the anniversary of the ’Velvet Revolution’ in Czechoslovakia when in 1989 after massive protests in the country the Communist regime stepped aside and a democratic government has been elected. This regime change is unique because it has been entirely bloodless, unless the first act of police brutality in dispersing the student meeting on November 17, 1989. The similarities between the Velvet Revolution and the Revolution of Dignity in Ukraine in 2014 were discussed with the Deputy Ambassador of the Czech Republic in Ukraine Jiri Preclik.
