SOLUTIONS
1. If John is taller than Mike and Mike is taller than Sarah, who is the shortest among them?
The first statement tells us that John is taller than Mike. This means if we were to rank them by height from tallest to shortest, John would be at the top compared to Mike. The second statement indicates that Mike is taller than Sarah. Therefore, in our ranking, Mike comes next after John, and Sarah would be shorter than both.
2. If all roses are flowers and some flowers fade quickly, which of the following statements must be true?
(A) All roses fade quickly: This cannot be concluded because while some flowers do fade quickly, it does not imply that all roses, which are a subset of flowers, must also fade quickly.
(B) Some flowers that fade quickly are not roses: This statement can be true since we know that only some flowers fade quickly and there could be other types of flowers besides roses that fall into this category.
(C) Some roses do not fade quickly: This statement is also plausible because if only some flowers fade quickly, it allows for the possibility that there are roses among those that do not fade quickly. This is potentially true but lacks definitive validation.
Conclusion: Based on the reasoning above, the only statement that must be true given the premises is B.
3. If a book costs $20 and is on sale for 25% off, how much does it cost after the discount?
Percentages are a way to express a number as a fraction of 100. So, 25% means 25 out of every 100 parts. To find out what 25% of $20 is, you can think of it as taking one-quarter (since 25% is one-fourth) of $20. If you divide $20 by four, you get $5. Therefore, the discount amount is $5. Now that we know the discount amount ($5), we subtract this from the original price ($20) and the result is $15.
4. If an athlete runs at a speed of 5 meters per second, how long will it take him to cover 600 meters?
If he runs for 10 seconds, he covers 50 meters (5×10). If he runs for 60 seconds, or one minute, he covers 300 meters (5×60). Since it takes him one minute (60 seconds) to cover half the distance (300 meters), logically doubling that time gives us an estimate for covering the entire distance of 600 meters, which is 2 minutes.
5. Which number logically follows this series: 2, 6, 12, 20 …?
The difference between 6 and 2 is 4. The difference between 12 and 6 is 6. The difference between 20 and 12 is 8. The pattern is: 4-6-8. So, the difference increases by 2 with each step. Following this logic, we expect that the next step will correspond to 10. Consequently, the last number will be 20 10, or 30.
