I love compositions that are really original and that work at the same time. Moritz Eggert has a good handful of them. Jerusalem is a musical lark coming from a genius guy. The work is inspired by the game of chairs in which a group of children run around an insufficient number of sits trying to get a place after a call. At each round, there is one less chair and one participant is out of the game. In German, the game is called “The Journey to Jerusalem,“ hence the title of the piece. In the musical version, the pianist has a circuit of actions around the piano, beginning and ending in the normal position in front of the keyboard. When we arrive at the place of origin, a closing signal marks the beginning of a new round to the sound circuit, but this time with one less chair; or in this case, with less sound material, until… well, let’s not reveal the end.
