North Wales is a land where legends come to life, castles crown rugged hillsides, and landscapes steal your breath away. In our new series, we’re whisking you away to some of North Wales’ most captivating gems.
We’ll wander through quaint and charming villages like Beddgelert, nestled in the heart of Eryri (Snowdonia) at the foot of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon). Here, the 800-year-old tale of Llewelyn the Great and his faithful hound still stirs the imagination and tugs at the heartstrings.
Or the more unusual whimsical wonderland that feels like stepping into a Mediterranean fairytale on the rugged Welsh coast. Architect Clough Williams-Ellis transformed this coastal village into a pastiche of styles, from classical columns to ornate bell towers, creating a colonoscopy of colours and a sense of playful surprise around every corner.
The rugged mountain landscape of Snowdonia has mesmerised me since I started coming here as a small boy. The narrow gauge railways that were pivotal in enabling the export of the slate around the world have filled me with wonder. It’s time again to climb aboard a century-old steam train as we ascend Snowdon, even if the weather tests us, the journey back through time makes it unforgettable.
Continuing that theme we invite you on a fascinating tour of the National Slate Museum, where the atmosphere of the Victorian workshops lingers as if quarrymen have just laid down their tools.
Preserved workers’ houses unveil a glimpse of life shaped in the quarry’s shadow, leaving us humbled by the skill and grit of the Welsh labourers.
Our routes twist through breathtaking valleys, offering endless surprises: waterfalls cascading down mountainsides, shimmering lakes, or ancient ruins tucked amidst the vibrant landscape.
Forget just arriving at a pub, getting to this 19th-century watering hole is an adventure in itself! Leave the car behind and hike the coastal path to be rewarded with an icy cold beer at this idyllic gem. The views are just breathtaking.
The Isle of Anglesey is the gateway to Ireland across the treacherous Menai Strait. Let’s explore some of its 125 miles of stunning coastline, windswept bays, and sheltered coves. A haven for history buffs and nature lovers alike. Keep your eyes peeled for those elusive and super-rare red squirrels!
Wales boasts more castles per square mile than anywhere else in the world! So it won’t be long before we stumble upon awesome fortresses, like the imposing Conwy Castle in a town which also contains the smallest house in Britain. Whether climbing Elizabethan towers for the best views or leaning over ramparts to see Robert Stevensons’ ingenious tubular train tunnel, there are a hundred reasons to tune in to our first instalment right here in Conwy from next weekend.
