Restoration Caucasian Dagger - Removing Century Rust
Hello folks! You haven’t seen such a restoration yet! I managed to get a unique Georgian dagger of the Caucasian type, which has been underground for a very long time, I guess (after checking the stamp ~ 150 years). I was told that it is impossible to restore it, it is already dusted, but I have a different opinion. Well, let’s start restoring this unique blade!
Firstly, I removed huge layers of rust with a spatula. All the metal of the dagger has turned to rust, but there is hope, the century rust was falling off the blade, it was very surprising! Next, the dagger placed it in a jar together with a rust remover. A few hours later I took it out, washed and dried it, but the rust remained. Via iron brush, I removed the remnants of rust from the blade. And even found the stamp of the dagger!
Rust has damaged the cutting edge very badly. I had to sand it off, due to the thickness that remained could be mm. Further, I welded all the holes that were on the blade and deep dents with welding at low voltage. Then I moved on to protecting the surface of the blade. First I etched the blade with nitric acid solution, and then I used a blackening agent and graphite grease.
The handle of the dagger, there were difficulties here too. Due to the handle of the dagger was all rusted and became very thin, I could not use ordinary wooden handle material, and I cut grooves in the wood and inserted the handle there. Next, I cut out the shape of the handle, sanded it and prepared it for gluing. For a better fixation, I cut out decorative fittings from bronze, which will also fix the handle entirely.
Steel dagger rivets, I had to go to my friend’s workshop because I don’t have a metal lathe machine. I glued the handle of the dagger with epoxy resin with sawdust. I riveted the handle with two rivets. And in order to give an older look, I tinted it with a paste that remained on the felt circle. This method gives the appearance of an old dagger handle that we can see in the museum.
I made the dagger sheath out of wood. I pasted the scabbard with natural leather of medium thickness. The accessories of the scabbard I made entirely of brass with decorative elements. The work takes a lot of time, but I hope you enjoy it. Please share your opinion and this video.
Sincerely, Alex. Thanks for attention!
Good luck and health to everyone! With best wishes, Alex!
