Charles Mingus & Eric Dolphy - I Can’t Get Started (Live in Paris in 1964) UNRELEASED!
Here’s an excellent radio recording of bassist/composer Charles Mingus and multi instrumentalist/composer Eric Dolphy performing a bass/flute duet of the standard “I Can’t Get Started“ in Paris on April 19th in 1964. Off stage, you couldn’t have two more contrasting personalities. Mingus was well known for being mercurial and would occasionally resort to violence. Dolphy on the other hand was rather shy, reserved and a gentle soul by all accounts. On stage however he fit the music Mingus was making at the time like hand in glove with his aggressive, outside and innovative approach to his instruments. He could burn on alto saxophone and the bass clarinet in addition to flute. He also showed great promise as a composer and released several highly regarded albums during his short career. But tragedy would sadly ensue not long after this concert. During a show in Berlin on June 27th in 1964 he fell ill due to undiagnosed diabetes and was brought to a hospital.
