The Ya’an-Xichang Expressway climbs from the edge of the Sichuan Basin to the highlands of the Hengduan Mountains. The average altitude rises by 7.5 meters for every kilometer it extends forward. The expressway shuttles through the mountains like a giant dragon.
This expressway passes through deep mountain valleys in the southwest where geological disasters are frequent. The terrain is extremely steep, the geological structure is extremely complex, the climate is extremely changeable, the ecological environment is extremely fragile, the construction conditions are extremely difficult, and safe operation is also extremely difficult. It is recognized by domestic and foreign experts and scholars as one of the mountain expressways with the worst natural conditions, the greatest engineering difficulty, and the highest technological content in China and even the world.
