Haddon Hall near Bakewell, set on the valley side above the river Wye in the Peak District, is a wonderful medieval Manor House steeped in a history that goes back over 900 years. The house and surrounding gardens are some of the most magical and romantic and although we’d missed most of the roses when we visited in late August, the borders were still bursting with colour. The house is approached along a driveway that passes over a pretty stone bridge spanning the Wye. At the end of the drive is a picture book stone cottage with oversized topiary that wouldn’t look out of place in a scene from Alice’s adventures in wonderland. A short steep climb takes us up through the gateway into the courtyard and after passing through the uniquely untouched medieval living quarters we emerge into the first of several garden terraces. With the wonderful backdrop of the Derbyshire countryside the gardens really are stunning, I hope you enjoy this trip around them
