JOHN COLTRANE (A saintly persona) Jazz History #57
During an interview, Coltrane was asked how he would like to be remembered. His seemingly joking reply was: “I’d like to be a saint.“ That comment was more prescient than he perhaps realized, as the parishioners of the Coltrane Church in San Francisco would likely agree. In the 1960s, the second of a career that lasted barely two decades, Coltrane took the music into uncharted territory, as impactful today as it was then, in the process affirming his saintly persona as one of the most important jazz musicians of all time.
